  1. Our guidance counselors provide daily student services in regard to academic performance, career advice, post secondary opportunities, social issue and prepare transcripts. Our student assistance counselor serves as an extension of our guidance department and coordinates counseling services that go beyond responsive and traditional counseling.

Post-Secondary Information

Developing your plan for post-secondary (after high school) options can be confusing in the modern world where the options are unlimited. For help in finding a career or for more information on prerequisites for post-secondary programs we recommend speaking with a guidance counselor, or checking the career links on our links page.

The Guidance Office contains the most recent information available on all colleges and universities in Ontario. During the year, field trips are arranged to our local Community College and University to enable senior students to investigate post-secondary opportunities. Throughout the year seminars are conducted by representatives from Colleges and Universities to assist students in making post-secondary choices.

Vocational Interest Tests are available for students at a modest cost. These tests help to identify one’s interest and provide a good indicator of future career possibilities.

Information is also available about scholarships and bursaries.

All students are encouraged to seek assistance when needed. Parents may arrange an interview by contacting the Guidance Office between 8:30am and 2:30pm.

University

University applications are generally due in mid-late January. Early completion of applications is recommended due to the high volume of applications and the competitive nature of the system. Searching for university programs and planning your post- secondary is available at ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca. Information sessions from universities visiting LDSS begin in September and continue throughout the first semester. Information sessions by the guidance department are generally held November-January. Check out the University application website for more detailed information. Interested students should also listen to morning announcements and check the events calendar for regular updates. Information on scholarships is also available.

College

College applications are generally due in late January. Early completion of applications is recommended especially for ‘highly competitive’ programs. Information sessions from Colleges visiting LDSS begin September and continue throughout the first semester. Information sessions by the guidance department are generally held November-January. Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are the gateway to many trades, providing a solid career. In an apprenticeship, students go through a mix of class instruction and practical training in preparation to become a certified trades person. Although the coop provides excellent opportunity for an introduction to a particular career, students interested in trades should look into the OYAP as a way to jump-start their apprenticeships while still in secondary school. LDSS hosts an Apprenticeship Information Evening in the fall.

Workplace

There are several types of assistance provided to facilitate a transition directly to the workplace. The Cooperative Education (Coop) is an excellent way for students to gain experience and establish professional contacts in the local community. There are also career fairs that occur throughout the school year that offer a wide variety of information for future employment. Assistance is also available with various print and online resources to help students find their place in the workplace.
